<text>Which Tells When the Fleet Sailed, and of the Officers and People Who Went with It

On the seventeenth day of the month of June of 1527, Governor Pánfilo de Narváez departed from the port of San Lúcar de Barrameda by authority and order of Your Majesty to conquer and govern the provinces which lie on the mainland from the River of Palms to Cape Florida . The fleet that he took consisted of five ships in which went six hundred men, more or less. The officers that he took-for they ought to be mentioned-were those named here: Cabeza de Vaca as treasurer and Provost Marshall ; Alonso Enríquez, purser; Alonso de Solís as Your Majesty's Factor, and Inspector; a friar of the Order of St. Francis named Juan Suárez, went as Commissary, along with four other friars of the same order.

We arrived at the island of Santo Domingo, where we remained nearly forty-five days provisioning ourselves with necessary supplies, especially horses. Here more than 140 men deserted our fleet, wanting to remain there because of the proposals and promises made to them by the people of that land. From there we departed and sailed to Santiago, a port on the island of Cuba, where during our stay of a few days the Governor supplied himself with men, arms and horses.

While there it happened that a gentleman named Vasco Porcalle, resident of the town of Trinidad on the same island, offered the governor certain provisions he had in Trinidad, one hundred leagues from the aforementioned port of Santiago. The governor departed for Trinidad with the entire fleet.</text>

                <text>THE KING

Since you yourself, Governor Álvar Núñez Cabeça de Vaca, resident of the city of Seville, gave us an account, saying that you had written a book entitled Account of What Occurred in the Indies, in the fleet with which you went as Governor, and that likewise you had written another one entitled Commentaries, both of which deal with the conditions of the land and the customs of the people in it, very useful works for those going to those places. And because one book and the other were the same thing, and it was practical to make them one volume, you asked us to give you license and permission so that it could be printed and sold for ten or twelve years, noting the benefits and utility that would come from it, or as we pleased; which, noted by the members of our Council together with the said books mentioned below, it was agreed that we should order the granting of our authorization in this matter. Therefore we grant you license and permission so that for the period of the next ten years, counted forward from the date of this our authorization, you or whoever may have your proxy may print and sell in these our kingdoms the aforesaid books, both in one volume, the forms having first been assessed by members of our Council and with our authorization and the said price at the beginning of the book, and not in any other manner. And we order that during said period of time, ten years, no person may print or sell it without your proxy, under penalty of loss of the copies by the person doing so and selling the book as well as the forms and equipment; and that he would further incur a penalty of ten thousand maravedís, to be divided as follows: one third for the person making the accusation, one third for the judge pronouncing the sentence and one third for our Chamber. And we order all and any of our representatives, and each within his own jurisdiction, to keep, comply with and execute this our authorization and what is contained in it, and that they not go against or beyond its tenor or form, nor allow anyone else to do so, under penalty of punishment and of ten thousand maravedís for our Chamber, to be paid by any violator. Given in the city of Valladolid on the twenty-first day of March, in the year one thousand five hundred and fifty-five.

                <text>Proem

Holy, Imperial, Catholic Majesty:

Among all the princes we know to have existed in the world, I think that none could be found whom men have endeavored to serve with such great diligence and desire as we see that they serve Your Majesty today. Very clearly one can recognize that this is not without great cause and reason, for men are not so blind that all would follow this path without a purpose. For we see that not only native countrymen obligated by faith and loyalty do so, but even foreigners make an effort to serve you because it is to their advantage. But although the desire and will to serve makes them all alike, there is a great difference, caused not by their own fault, but rather by fortune, or more correctly, through no one's fault, but only by the will and wisdom of God. Thus it happens that one does more distinguished deeds than he expected, and things are so reversed for another that the only thing he can show of his purpose is diligence. And even this diligence is sometimes so hidden that it cannot be noticed.

For myself I can say that, regarding the journey I made to the Spanish Main by order of Your Majesty, in truth I thought that my deeds and service would be as distinguished and manifest as those of my ancestors, and that I would have no need to speak in order to be reckoned among those who administer and deal with Your Majesty's charges with complete faith and great care and are therefore honored.</text>

<text>But, since my counsel and my diligence were of little avail in accomplishing the task for which we went in the service of Your Majesty, and since God permitted, because of our sins, that of all the expeditions that ever went to those lands, no other encountered such great dangers or had such a miserable and disastrous outcome, I can render only this service: to bring to Your Majesty an account of what I learned and saw in the ten years that I wandered lost and naked through many and very strange lands, noting the location of lands and provinces and the distances between them as well as the sustenance and animals produced in each, and the diverse customs of the many and very barbarous peoples with whom I came into contact and lived, and all the other particulars which I could observe and know, so that Your Majesty should be served in some way by this. For although I always had very little hope of escaping from them, I always took great care and diligence to remember the particulars of everything, so that if at some time God our Lord wished to bring me to the place where I now am, I could give witness to my will and desire to serve Your Majesty.

Since my account of this is, in my opinion, prudent and not frivolous, for the sake of those who go to conquer those lands and also to bring the inhabitants to a knowledge of the true faith and true Lord and to the service of Your Majesty, I wrote with great certainty; although one may read some very novel things, very hard to believe for some, they can believe them without a doubt and accept them as very true, for I am brief rather than long-winded in everything. And it will suffice for this that I have offered it to Your Majesty as such, whom I beg will receive it in the name of service, for this is the only thing that a man who returned naked could bring back.</text>
